Easing CK’s Housing Crunch

Work is now underway on the largest housing development in Chatham-Kent in decades.

Dubbed The Meadows, the project will see around 380 new homes built on Chatham’s south side.

Robb Nelson, president of Maple City Homes says the development will help ease the housing crunch in Chatham-Kent, giving more options for those who are currently renting or want to upgrade, as well as attracting newcomers to the area.

“The immigrant market, we’ve got 500,000 people coming into Ontario every year, they’re looking to move somewhere,” Nelson says. “These are very affluent people, very highly educated, and we’re creating that opportunity to welcome them to CK.”

Just off Bloomfield Road near Park Avenue West, Mayor Darrin Canniff says the location is ideal.

“It’s three kilometres from the 401, so anyone who wants to commute from Windsor, London, it opens that causeway,” Canniff says. “I see development moving forward out this way, ultimately in 10 years I see this whole road out to the 401 being full so when you pull off at Bloomfield, you’ve entered the city right there.”

The massive project will be a boon for skilled trades, providing as many as 200 jobs.

The first phase of the project will include 93 homes, pumping more than $30-million into the local economy.
