Easing the Burden for Habitat for Humanity

Some municipal officials want to make it easier for Habitat Humanity to help low income families.

Councillor Darrin Canniff is asking administration for a report on what types of fees can be waived for the organization’s future builds in Chatham-Kent.

“All the development fees, there’s a number of different fees and applications, there’s a lot of process to all that,” Canniff explains. “If we pass a motion that’s going to forgive them right out of the gate, it saves them numerous hours and they can plan for it, and can build house sooner because they don’t have to worry about those fees.”

The Ward 6 Councillor says that he hopes fees will be waived for their administrative offices and the ReStore.

The non-profit organization is currently working on its fifth home build in Chatham-Kent, constructing a house in Pain Court.

The fee report is due back to council in August.
