As staff and students prepare to head back to the classroom next week, an annual report card on elementary schools across Ontario has been released.
This year, the Fraser Institute’s Report Card on Ontario’s Elementary Schools ranks over 3000 public, Catholic, and independent schools based on nine academic indicators from province-wide test results in reading, writing, and math.
Locally, Monsignor Uyen Catholic School was the top ranked school in Chatham-Kent, earning a 7.3 out of 10. At the other end of the spectrum, Victor Lauriston Public School earned the lowest grade in the municipality, at just 0.9.
“It doesn’t matter where a school is ranked, or what challenges its students may face. The evidence is clear—all types of schools, located all over the province with different types of students, are all capable of improvement,” said Peter Cowley, a Fraser Institute senior fellow.
