Construction on Elgin Street in Wallaceburg won’t be complete until at least May or June, according to engineering officials.
In a phone interview with the 99.1 newsroom Friday morning, Chris Thibert, Director of Engineering and Transportation, says the project has been delayed due to wet weather.
“And as a result, it has pushed back the completion date for this project to the spring of 2019. But what will be done in 2018 is from Forhan to Linden Street on Elgin is going to be fully complete less any kind of final grading like sod and seed work in the boulevards, but the actual road and all the infrastructure and the sidewalk and the curbs are all going to be complete by 2018,” explains Thibert.
He says Linden to Gordon Street will have base asphalt and curbs on the road, but the new sidewalk from Dauw to Gordon won’t be completed until the spring. 2019 will be finishing up the surface asphalt from Linden to Gordon.
Thibert also says the roads will be prepped for the winter, with no exposed gravel or aggregate.
“We’re anticipating early spring. Typically the asphalt plant, based on previous years, open up at the beginning of May, but the contractor is looking to be getting in there in April to prep everything up and get everything ready for as soon as the asphalt plant opens up and have everything wrapped up by May or June,” says Thibert.
When it comes to the raised manhole covers, Thibert says they’ll be taking care of those as well.
“What will happen is that we’re going to ensure that the contractors put some asphalt around the manhole covers just to put a bit of a lip to it so that the plows can go over it and not get snagged by it,” says Thibert.
