High winds have forced the closure of Erie Shore Drive once again.

Local residents and emergency vehicles will be the only ones allowed to travel on the stretch between Bisnett Line and Erieau Road.

Municipal officials say the decision was made yesterday as strong wave action and sustained winds forced water over the roadway in several spots.

Ryan Brown, Chatham Kent Director of Public Works, said 35-40 kilometer per hour winds from the southwest with gusts to 60 km/hr forced water from Lake Erie over homes and cottages onto the roadway.

“If you aren’t a resident, there is no reason to be on that road at this time,” Brown says.

There are about 120 homes and cottages located along the road which sits atop a dyke protecting low-lying farmland to the north.

Brown says municipal staff are monitoring the situation and will provide updates when they can.
