Conservative Members of Parliament have voted to remove Erin O’Toole from his position as party leader.

In a secret-ballot vote Wednesday morning, 73 out of 118 Conservative MPs voted to oust O’Toole as their party leader. The decision paves the way for a new leadership race, only 18 months after O’Toole was voted in to lead the party.

O’Toole, a four-term MP in the riding of Durham, has faced mounting criticism from Tory members after shifting his party’s position in several areas, including balanced budgets and carbon taxes.

O’Toole will be replaced by an interim leader who will be selected later in the day.
