Municipal officials are expected to amend the Chatham-Kent fireworks bylaw at tonight’s council meeting to officially allow for Diwali to be added to the list of approved dates for igniting and setting off of fireworks.
Diwali is the Hindu festival of lights with its variations also celebrated in other Indian religions. Fireworks were permitted for the celebration last October.
An online survey was launched the following month to allow community input on possibly adding more celebrations to the list, as well as taking comments from those who find fireworks disruptive.
If approved by council, Diwali will officially join Victoria Day, Canada Day and New Year’s Day as approved fireworks dates.
Fireworks are allowed three days before and three days following the approved dates.
