A local group is doing what it can to help the homeless in Chatham-Kent.
Volunteers with Reach Out Chatham-Kent, or ROCK, provide food, clothing, and other necessities to those in need, primarily in Chatham.
However, Executive Director Al McGuigan says they’re hoping to expand beyond the Chatham city limits in the new year.
“In the spring we’ll be able to do that, that’s our goal,” says McGuigan. “I received a call today about expanding into the rural area because there is a need out there.”
ROCK is one of three agencies on the receiving end of an $18,000 donation from Maple City Homes this week to help the homeless.
McGuigan says their volunteers help about 80 people twice a week, either those loving on the street or so-called “couch surfers” who don’t have a permanent or stable place of their own to stay.
