Downtown Wheatley was rocked by an explosion late Thursday afternoon.

Emergency crews were at the scene by 4:30pm responding to an alarm near the corner of Erie Street North and Talbot Trail and began evacuating residents in the immediate area.

The explosion took place at roughly 6 o’clock, leaving two buildings heavily damaged and debris spread across the area.

Municipal officials say three people have been taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

It’s the same site as two previous hydrogen sulphide gas leaks this summer.

Witnesses at the scene say the force of the blast blew out the windows of neighbouring businesses.

Earlier this month, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry launched an investigation into the source of hydrogen sulphide following two leaks in June and July.

The two previous leaks resulted in emergency declarations and evacuations, but the gas dissipated within a day or two in both instances.

A reception area has been set up at the Wheatley Arena for those who have been evacuated.

Officials say more information will be released in the morning.
