The municipality is urging residents to take precautions as hot and humid weather returns to Chatham-Kent.
Environment Canada has issued a Yellow Heat Warning for Chatham-Kent, with temperatures between 29C and 31C forecasted for Tuesday through Wednesday. Humidex values are expected to reach 38C.
Municipal officials warn that high temperatures and humidity can lead to heat exhaustion or even heat stroke.
Residents are encouraged to drink plenty of water, seek cooler or air-conditioned spaces, wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing, avoid strenuous activities, and keep curtains closed to block the sun during the day. Never leave people or pets in a parked car, and check on elderly family members and neighbours daily to make sure they are keeping cool.
Municipal centres, branches of the Chatham-Kent Public Library, and Hope Haven on Wellington Street West in Chatham are available as cooling stations during regular hours of operation.
Homeless persons and/or those lacking shelter, water, or food are particularly vulnerable to the impacts of extreme heat. Anyone experiencing homelessness should call the Homeless Response Line at 519-354-6628 for support.
