Provincial Police are keeping a closer eye on the roads.
With an increase in deadly crashes involving motorcycles across Ontario, the OPP is expanding its vantage point with a Cessna airplane.
Authorities say over the past week alone, there have been 39 fatal motorcycle crashes, setting the stage for a potential 10 year high in motorcycle deaths on OPP-patrolled roads.
Officials say the Cessna used in the OPP’s Aerial Enforcement Program (AEP,) is an effective tool for spotting and tracking speeding motorcyclists and other aggressive drivers such as those who follow too closely or make unsafe lane changes, which are among the behaviour attributed to fatalities every year.
The OPP Cessna pilot is accompanied by a police observer who uses specialized equipment to calculate the distance a vehicle travels between highway markings to accurately determine a driver’s speed.
The OPP reminds riders as well as motorists who share roadways with them that motorcyclists are the most vulnerable drivers on our roads – even when they drive safely.
