Rural communities across the country are being given a financial boost, thanks to funding from Farm Credit Canada (FCC.)
$1.5 million is being invested through FCC’s AgriSpirit Fund to support 83 projects nation-wide, including community food production and gardens, learning facilities and storage facilities.
Locally, the Highgate District Agricultural Society received $15,000 to complete facility repairs and infrastructure upgrades to enhance the safety, functionality, and longevity of the community park and fairgrounds.
Officials say the funding was used to replace fencing around the 4H show ring and perimeter fencing in the parking lot.
“As a 100% volunteer based charity that is responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of the park in Highgate, we rely heavily on funding through granting programs and initiatives like this,” officials with the Highgate District Agricultural Society said in a post on social medial. “Thanks to our sponsors, donors, and the remarkable granting organizations like Farm Credit Canada, we can help make sure this community resource is here for generations to come.”
Another $16,000 was earmarked for the Glencoe Agricultural Society to upgrade the fairground lighting with energy-efficient fixtures to improve safety, visibility, and support community events.
Elgin County has been given $25,000 to purchase training props and support equipment for a live fire training facility to enhance firefighter training and emergency response preparedness.
FCC officials say the AgriSpirit Fund investments reflect FCC’s commitment to the long-term vitality of rural Canada and to the communities that help our agriculture and food industry thrive.
