Federal funding is helping to expand a local arts program for seniors in Chatham-Kent.

The Thames Art Gallery has been granted $25,000 through Ottawa’s New Horizons for Seniors Program, earmarked for the Spark Joy! program, which promotes create engagement and reducing social isolation among older adults.

Officials say they are looking for up to 10 volunteers aged 55 or older to help lead engaging art activities at the Thames Art Gallery and the Alzheimer Society of Chatham-Kent day programs, as well as a digital art collaboration with the Boys and Girls Club of Chatham-Kent.

Art therapist Krista Schneider and ceramicist Andrea Vuletin will provide training for volunteers to work effectively with participants of all ages, including those living with dementia, to foster joyful connections through art.

“This program offers seniors a chance to gather socially, learn, and make a real impact in their community,” said Irene MacCreadie, Gallery Coordinator. “Thanks to the New Horizons for Seniors Program, we’re proud to support seniors in finding purpose through art.”

Spark Joy! runs until March 2026 and is part of a national effort to improve seniors’ well-being and promote social inclusion.

A welcome event is being held at the Gallery on William Street North in Chatham on Tuesday, June 3 from 1-3pm to get an overview of the project.
