Federal Investment To Support Trail, Campsite Upgrades

The federal government is investing over $50,000 in upgrades and improvements for local trails and campgrounds.

Through the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario, the St. Clair Region Conservation Authority (SCRCA) has received $54,652 from Ontario’s Southwest Regional Tourism Organization.

The contribution will be used to upgrade 1,050 metres of the Petrolia-based Lorne C. Henderson Conservation Area trail system to stone dust. Gravel pads will also be installed at all three of the conservation authority’s regional campgrounds.

“During the COVID-19 pandemic, we saw a large increase in the number of visitors to our Conservation Areas. The funding provided by the Government of Canada will allow us to upgrade and improve the accessibility of the trail systems at one of our most popular parks and improve the camping experience at all our campgrounds for years to come,” said SCRCA Chair Mike Stark in a news release.

The investment is part of the Government of Canada’s Tourism Relief Fund, which has provided nearly $11 million to local tourism organizations and businesses in southwestern Ontario, to help them safely welcome back visitors and recover from the impacts of the pandemic.
