The cost to build 50 transitional cabins in Chatham to support the local homeless community is now being covered by the Canadian government.

The federal government announced on Monday that it will provide $3.7 million through the Affordable Housing Fund for Pathways on Park, located on Park Street and Hyslop Street.

The municipality began accepting tenants in early August at the shelter complex, which is made up of 50 small cabins that are around 100 square feet each. All tenants have access to a bed, fridge, microwave, climate control, shared kitchen, shared bathrooms, and a shared community room.

“This investment is a major step forward in addressing the urgent need for supportive housing in Chatham-Kent,” said CK Mayor Darrin Canniff in a news release. “The 50 new cabins at Pathways on Park are now providing safe, stable spaces for residents who need them most, while helping people take the next step toward permanent housing.”

Pathways on Park is staffed by Chatham-Kent Housing Services, who provide 24/7 case management, life skills training, mental health and addiction services, and housing outreach. Around-the-clock security personnel are also employed on-site.

The transitional cabin program was originally approved by CK Council in April 2024, at a cost of more than $3.8 million.
