In an honour only three other players share, Chatham-Kent baseball legend Fergie Jenkins will soon have his likeness immortalized outside of Chicago’s Wrigley Field.
A statue of the Baseball Hall of Famer and Chatham-Kent native will be unveiled on Friday at Gallagher Way as part of the newly installed “Statue Row,” which will also feature statues of fellow Hall of Famers and former teammates Ernie Banks, Billy Williams and Ron Santo.
CK Mayor Darrin Canniff has confirmed to CKXS News that he will be attending the unveiling to deliver remarks. Chatham-Kent town crier George Sims will also travel to Chicago to introduce Jenkins.
This marks another major honour for the former Cubs player. Along with his enshrinement in the Baseball Hall of Fame, Jenkins No. 31 was retired in 2009 alongside fellow No. 31 Greg Maddux.
Jenkins pitched at least 20 complete games in six consecutive seasons with the Cubs between 1967-1972.
