Downtown Chatham will be easier to access at the end of this month – that’s when the Fifth Street Bridge is expected to re-open.
Work first began in early July, 2017, but faced delays and the original completion date of December was pushed back by almost seven months.
The bridge is epxected to reopen to traffic by the end of June, although Thomas Kelly, Chatham-Kent’s Manager of Infrastructure and Engineering Services, says that estimate is dependent on weather.
Kelly says once the bridge opens, some construction fencing will remain.
“You’re going to still see typical construction fences and wonder why isn’t it gone,” Kelly explains. “There is going to be a contractor working there until end of October to finish that work, that’s the high speed cable transfer, and they’re utilizing the bridge.”
Kelly says everyone involved in the project appreciates the public’s patience during the construction.
