An investigation is ongoing following a house fire that downed power lines and caused significant damage in Charing Cross.

Firefighters with Chatham-Kent Fire and Rescue responded to the residential blaze at 20845 Charing Cross Road at around 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, finding heavy fire conditions as they arrived.

Strong easterly winds had helped the fire spread quickly through the upper part of the single-storey house, causing the roof to collapse.

Fire crews worked to contain the blaze from the outside and were able to prevent the flames from spreading further. Power lines were also found down at the scene, and utility companies were notified.

All of the occupants who were in the home at the time of the fire were able to escape the house safely, and no injuries have been reported.

Fire officials said early information suggests the fire may have started in a vehicle parked close to the house, before spreading to the home and causing extensive damage.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
