Officials with the Wallaceburg Lakers are still in shock after a weekend fire at Memorial Arena.
Assistant GM Darryl Lucio says the team likely lost all of their equipment in Saturday morning’s blaze.
“I was told to get to the arena Saturday morning as soon as I could. Smoke was coming out of the Zamboni doors, the fire entered the building through the Lakers room and Red Devils change room – that’s apparently where the fire was, on the other side of that. I haven’t been in to see anything yet, I’m still waiting for the okay to go in and see how much we’ve lost. I’m assuming we lost everything,” says Lucio.
Lucio says he’s got enough equipment to make do for the start of spring mini-camp at Thames Campus Arena tonight.
As for what comes next, Lucio says he is glad no one was hurt and says things can be replaced.
“We don’t really know what’s going to go on from here, we don’t even know what the cause was yet, unfortunately it’s a blow to Wallaceburg,” says Lucio.
