Two Blenheim residents have become the first to tie the knot in a civil marriage ceremony at the Chatham-Kent Civic Centre.

Ashley Glazier and Grant Chinnick of Blenheim exchanged vows in the presence of loved ones on the back patio of the Civic Centre in Chatham on June 7.

The first-ever Chatham-Kent civil marriage ceremony was performed by Municipal Clerk Judy Smith.

“As municipal clerk, I am honoured to have the authority to officiate non-religious, legal civil marriage ceremonies within Chatham-Kent,” said Smith in a news release. “It is a privilege to be able to share in the couple’s special day and to be able to provide an enhanced service to the community.”

At a May 29 meeting, Chatham-Kent Council approved a motion to authorize the municipal clerk to offer civic marriage ceremonies under the Ontario Marriage Act.
