First Nation Support for Woodlot Preservation

A local First Nations community has come out in support of a woodlot preservation bylaw for Chatham-Kent.

Chippewas of the Thames First Nation sent a letter to Chatham-Kent recently, to voice their support to preserve the remaining woodlots in the municipality. They said it’s important that Chatham-Kent do its part to be good neighbours and stewards of the environment by protecting the remaining woodlots that are left.

Chatham-Kent councillor Brock McGregor said the input from the Chippewas of the Thames First Nation is important.

“I think it’s really important that we recognize our responsibility to take input from Indigenous groups and recognize that we’re in Treaty territory and that comes with significant responsibility,” McGregor said.

McGregor said that it’s important to not only respect not just the current use of the land but also reflect a commitment to agreements with traditional stewards of the land, while making decisions that are in the best interest of future generations.
