A flag honouring Terry Fox on the 40th anniversary of his cross Canada trek was raised outside the Chatham-Kent Civic Centre on Monday.
Participants from across Chatham-Kent and Canada will be taking part in a virtual event to mark the 40th annual Terry Fox Run this Sunday.
Although the COVID-19 pandemic will change the manner in which the event takes place, the cause of raising funds for cancer research continues.
With no physical sign-in, people are encouraged to participate at the location of their choice.
Having lost one leg to cancer, Terry made the decision in 1980 to run across Canada to raise funds and awareness. He dipped his artificial leg in the Atlantic Ocean in St John’s, Newfoundland April 12 of that year.
Averaging 42 kilometres a day through six provinces, Terry was forced to abandon the run on September 1 when, after 5,373 kilometres, his cancer returned. He died 10 months later at age 22.
More than $800 million has been raised in Terry’s name during the past 40 years.
