Flood Prevention Comes at a Cost

The Lower Thames Valley Conservation Authority continues to keep an eye on the Thames River as the ice jam sits between the river mouth and the Prairie Siding Bridge.

Water Management Supervisor Jason Wintermute says says floods and ice jams could be worse if the infrastructure in place doesn’t get the care and maintenance it requires.

“The protections that are there need some care,” Wintermute says. “It’s been a long time since they’ve been rebuilt, there’s leaks from rodent holes and things like this, and I think there needs to be some maintenance there.”

However, Wintermute says any work comes at a cost, and it’s up to the community to decide if they want stronger infrastructure in place to reduce the risk of flooding.
