More flooding could be coming to the Thames River, with water levels continue to rise after heavy rain over the weekend and more on the way over the next few days.

According to the Lower Thames Valley Conservation Authority, water levels are expected to peak in Thamesville tomorrow and Chatham Tuesday night into Wednesday. In the meantime, property owners along King Street in downtown Chatham have been warned of the possibility of flooded basements in the next day or two.

“As the peak reaches Chatham, it is possible that water levels will be high enough that the LTVCA will need to operate the 6th Street Backwater Dam and Pumping Station,” an online statement reads. “There is considerable uncertainty in the forecasts due to the predicted rain on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday as the peak arrives in Chatham. However, businesses and residents in this stretch should be prepared for possible flooding on Tuesday.”

River levels are already high enough that flooding is occurring in the low-lying, mostly agricultural, river flats adjacent to the river from Delaware down to Chatham.
