Waves pounding against the Lake Erie Shoreline. August 2019.

With three days of strong winds in the forecast, conservation officials are warning of possible erosion and flooding along the Lake Erie shoreline.

The Lower Thames Valley Conservation Authority said wind gusts between 45-80 km/h are possible beginning Friday and lasting into Sunday, which could cause flooding along Erie Shore Drive in Chatham-Kent.

Wave heights of 2-3 metres on Lake Erie are also expected.

Due to high lake levels and wave conditions, there is also a risk that wave action could damage shoreline protection works and cause erosion all along the Lake Erie shoreline in Chatham-Kent and Elgin County, including along the high bluff areas.

Local residents are urged to use caution and avoid the shoreline, as conditions could become dangerous due to possible hazardous debris, slippery banks, and unseen hazards caused by standing water.
