Former Homeless Shelter to be Converted to Seniors Apartments

New seniors’ housing is coming to Chatham’s south-east end.

The former Victoria Park Public School at 215 Murray Street in Chatham has been rezoned to allow a 31-unit apartment complex.

The former elementary school most recently served as Victoria Park Place, Chatham-Kent’s emergency homeless shelter with the municipality leasing the property from a private ownership group from 2022 until mid-2025.

Council voted unanimously to approve the redevelopment, which will convert the existing building into residential units ranging in size from approximately 430 to 740 square feet. The applicant has indicated an intention to provide affordable units and target seniors as tenants.

The zoning also allows for the possibility of additional medium-density housing on the property in the future. However, any further development will only be permitted once infrastructure upgrades are completed and servicing requirements are met.
