No word yet on what sparked a house fire near downtown Chatham that displaced four residents.

Emergency crews responded to a King Street East property shortly after 5:30 Thursday afternoon.

Fire fighters from Stations 1 and 2 responded to the blaze, spotting heavy black smoke and flames coming from the rear apartment of the multi-unit building.

The flames were brought under control within minutes, and officials say a search of the building found no occupants inside.

Fire fighters ensured the fire had not spread to the attic and aired out the building.

No injuries have been reported. Damage is estimated at $180,000.
