Two people are facing multiple charges in connection with a scam targeting international students at Lambton College.

The Canada Border Services Agency launched an investigation in February after receiving a tip from college officials. Authorities say the two accused allegedly took roughly $126,000 from international students by falsely promising the funds would be used to pay their tuition fees. Victims were provided with fraudulent enrollment documents, but were not actually enrolled in any post-secondary programs.

Search warrants were executed at the homes and businesses of the accused, with a number of electronic devices seized.

The pair have since been charged with four counts each of fraud over $5,000, uttering forged documents, and counselling misrepresentation contrary to the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act.

A Cambridge resident was arrested and made his first court appearance on Friday. The second suspect, from London, is believed to have fled the country and is now wanted on an arrest warrant.
