As we head into the long Family Day weekend, provincial officials are hoping to see more people getting out their rods and reels.

In an effort to encourage more outdoor activities, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry is waiving the need for fishing licenses through Monday.

However, officials say all conservation license catch limits, size limits, sanctuaries and other regulations still apply.

This is the first of four times through the year when Canadian residents can fish without a license, including the weekends of Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, as well as during Family Fishing Week from June 29th to July 7th.

Residents taking part in free fishing periods will need to carry federal or provincial identification showing their name and date of birth.
