Money from the province given to Chatham-Kent for meeting new housing targets last year could be used towards building cabins for the homeless.

Chatham-Kent received $440,000 from the province earlier this year as part of a reward that municipalities get for building homes based on performance towards provincially assigned housing targets.

Chatham-Kent council will vote on Monday night on whether to use that money towards a proposed transitional cabin project slated to be built on Park Street in Chatham.

The project will include 50 small cabins, which will provide transitional housing for those experiencing homelessness. It will replace Chatham-Kent’s current Victoria Park Place emergency homeless shelter, located on Murray Street.
