A gas leak in downtown Wheatley has prompted a response from emergency services once again, this time due to a ruptured gas main.

The Municipality of Chatham-Kent said an independent contractor conducting demolition work at 24 Erie St. N. struck a gas main on Wednesday.

Enbridge responded to the scene to repair the main while four units with Chatham-Kent Fire and Rescue conducted precautionary air monitoring, ensuring ongoing public safety.

Erie Street North was closed while the gas main was repaired.

Municipal officials said the ruptured gas main is unrelated to ongoing gas releases from abandoned gas and water wells. An investigation and monitoring of the most recent gas releases near the Wheatley library remains ongoing.
