Local fire fighters are preparing for a town-wide campaign to help protect Wheatley residents from potential future gas leaks.
In the wake of the 2021 explosion, officials with Chatham-Kent Fire and Rescue will be delivering 1000 multi-gas alarms to residents in Wheatley and the surrounding area.
The devices, which plug into the wall with a battery back-up, will monitor for carbon monoxide, propane, and natural gas.
The alarms will be distributed door-to-door within the evacuation zone starting February 20th. Those living outside the evacuation zone will be able to pick one up at the Wheatley Resource Centre.
Wheatley Resource Centre, located at 108 Talbot Road East, is open Monday to Friday 9am-5pm and on Saturdays from 10am-2pm.
“This reassurance campaign continues our proactive and protective measures to the Community of Wheatley as we continue to bring stability to the area affected by releases of gas,” said Fire Chief Chris Case. “We’re thankful for the Provincial funding to be able to provide the people of Wheatley with practical measures to keep themselves, their families, and the community safe.”
The alarms are being paid for through a $280,000 grant from the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry.
