While access to the site of the August 26 explosion remains prohibited, progress is being made to improve safety conditions in Wheatley.
The Municipality of Chatham-Kent said workers at the site in downtown Wheatley have successfully brought the second of two hydrogen sulphide gas wells to the surface. A test separator and monitoring equipment will be installed this week, effectively improving overall safety at the site.
This process has already been completed on the first gas well.
Crews will also be conducting tests with pressurized water to see if there are any underground connections between the two wells.
Over the weekend, 10 individuals were granted temporary access to their properties in the area. To date, 69 appointments have been completed and 21 appointments are ready to be booked. However, properties in the blast area are still off-limits due to safety concerns.
