As residents along Erie Shore Drive continue packing up their belongings, local first responders have been going door-to-door speaking to homeowners in Erieau and other low-lying homes in the area.
Fire Chief Chris Case says they’ve been focusing on the area that would be flooded should the dike fail, and making sure everyone has the supplies they might need, including adequate food, water, medicine, and emergency supplies.
If the dike fails, municipal officials say it would only take 6-8 hours the area to flood, cutting off access to the village of Erieau.
Erie Shore Drive and the area protected by the dike have been under a state of emergency since last Friday due to the elevated possibility for a dike failure that could lead to flooding of 1,600 acres of land and homes to the north of the dike.
Emergency repairs are slated to begin on Monday.
The municipality’s main phone line will be staffed until 8 o’clock tonight, and 8am to 6pm over the weekend for anyone who has questions or concerns.
