Going To The Polls On Walpole

voteMembers of the Bkejwanong First Nations on Walpole Island will be going to the polls on June 11th t elect a new Chief and 12 council members.

Tonight will be speech night.  This is the only public forum that will be available for the candidates to address the Band members before voting takes place.

Elections are held every 2 years according to the Federal Acts, unlike elections for their Federal, Province or Municipal counterparts.

Many members of the Bkejwanong First Nations live off of Walpole, voting forms have been mailed out so that they can vote.

Band members can vote either by mailing in their forms or attending the elections and voting in person on the 11th.

Key issues that have been talked about are the Sydenham Hospital and the effects the closure of the ER would have on residence, as well as education and the fight to keep native languages alive.
