With the province looking at a pilot project for allowing golf carts on local roads in the province, Chatham-Kent councillor Trevor Thompson is bringing in a motion at tonight’s council meeting to ask the province to consider a few Chatham-Kent communities to be part of the province’s pilot project. The project will allow golf carts to drive on the roads of selected communities in a 10-year span to determine if existing rules of the road are adequate for golf carts, as well as investigate if golf carts and cars and trucks can share the road in harmony, in selected communities.

The province selected Pelee Island and Huron-Kinloss to be part of the pilot project, but Thompson said Chatham-Kent communities such as Erieau and Mitchell’s Bay should be part of the provincial golf cart pilot project, and hopes council approves his motion to send a letter to the province asking for possible inclusion in the project.

Mitchell’s Bay and Erieau both have a lot in common. Both are small lake-side villages that are tight-knit. Both communities rely on recreational tourism, camping and local trails as their drawing cards. Both would be tailor-made for allowing golf carts on their roads.
