Grandparent Scam Continues To Plague CK

Police are issuing another warning as residents continue to receive suspicious phone calls that are believed to be part of the so-called “grandparent scam.”

The Chatham-Kent Police Service said the phone calls are typically from people claiming to be a grandchild, the family member’s lawyer, a court officer, or a police officer.

Police said the callers claim a family member has been arrested, mugged, had a car accident, or is stuck in another province/country.

Eventually, the caller will ask for money by using panic threatening language, or an aggressive tone to scare people into making payments.

Police said if you receive one of these calls, you should ask questions only family members would know, contact the family member in question, or call someone you trust for advice.

If you or someone you know has been the victim of a scam, you are encouraged to call police at 519-352-1234.
