Another warning from Chatham-Kent Police about keeping financial and personal information safe.
Authorities say they have received several calls from potential victims of the so-called Grandparent Scam who were contacted by someone claiming to be a family member who needed money to get out of jail or some other crisis.
Police say the scammers will often present themselves as a distraught grandchild, police officer, or lawyer, demanding money and using terminology including gag order, bailiff, or bail bondsmen, which may sound legitimate but are not used in the Canadian justice system.
If you fall victim to a fraud or know someone who has, contact your local police service to report the crime and also report it to the CAFC at 1-888-495-8501 or online on the Fraud Reporting System (FRS), even if there was no financial loss.
