A local man is facing charges after he was allegedly seen carrying a rifle while walking in downtown Chatham.

The Chatham-Kent Police Service said officers responded to King Street West at around 7:20 p.m. on Sunday, after receiving reports of a man carrying what appeared to be a firearm.

The man was located on the Fifth Street bridge, but before officers could arrest the man, he threw the firearm into the Thames River.

After his arrest, authorities said the man also threatened to harm one of the officers while he was being transported to police headquarters.

As a result, a 28-year-old Chatham-Kent man has been charged with possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose, pointing a firearm, uttering threats, failing to comply with a release order and four counts of possessing a weapon contrary to a prohibition order. He was held in custody pending a bail hearing.
