Habitat Building Itself a New Home

An organization that focuses on building homes for those in need is now laying the groundwork for a new home of its own.

Officials with Habitat for Humanity Chatham-Kent broke ground this week for a new ReStore at 55 Junction Avenue, near Park Avenue East and Sass Road.

The non-profit group went before council back in June asking for the land to be re-zoned to allow for a larger facility with more retail space.

Officials say the new 12,000 square foot facility will continue to house affiliate offices as well as an expanded ReStore. The Junction Avenue location is expected to open in the summer of 2024.

Operated by Habitat for Humanity, the ReStore accepts donations of used building material, appliances, furniture, and other items to restore for sale. The proceeds are then used by Habitat to fund their primary function of building affordable housing and promoting homeownership as a means to break the cycle of poverty.

Meantime, work continues on a new semi-detached property in Chatham, providing homes for two families in need.
