The local branch of the Habitat for Humanity is being recognized for its efforts in the community.
Nancy McDowell, Executive Director for Habitat for Humanity Chatham-Kent, says her organization won the sustainable funding award from the national level of Habitat.
“This particular award came through a partnership with the municipality of Chatham-Kent,” McDowell explains. “It’s a program where we take life-cycled computers that are done in their workplace, we test them, put operating systems back on, and then hand them out to low-income families in the community that are referred through the municipality.”
McDowell says that program has been running for the past 12 months and will continue for at least another two years, with as many as 700 computers expected to be handed out this year alone.
