Habitat Looking For a Larger ReStore Home

Habitat for Humanity is preparing to relocate its own home in Chatham-Kent.

The non-profit organization will go before municipal council this evening, requesting a zoning by-law amendment for a parcel of land Junction Avenue in Chatham, near Park Avenue East and Sass Road.

The land is currently designated Employment Area in the Chatham-Kent Official Plan and zoned General Industrial, but officials would like to increase the gross floor area and retail space from 20% to 60%.

Operated by Habitat for Humanity, the ReStore accepts donations of used building material, appliances, furniture, and other items to restore for sale. The proceeds are then used by Habitat to fund their primary function of building affordable housing and promoting homeownership as a means to break the cycle of poverty.

A report to council says that while most of the proposed operation is permitted as-of-right on the subject lands, the office space and processing area require a majority space devoted to the sale of the restored items.
