Chatham-Kent Victim Services has launched a new community reporting tool to allow residents to report acts of hate and discrimination within Chatham-Kent.

The organization said the online reporting system, which was created in consultation with local organizations, groups, and advocates, will serve as a central location for reporting incidents outside of law enforcement.

“We know that many people don’t report experiences motivated by hate or bias directed at them just because of who they are,” said Rebecca Haskell-Thomas, CK’s coordinator of diversity, equity, inclusion and justice. “Reporting to the police is still an option, but this new reporting tool gives people a different way to get support. And, the combined and anonymous information from the reports will help us see trends to understand better what is happening in the community and how we can work together to promote a safe and inclusive Chatham-Kent for everyone.”

Incidents that could be reported include but are not limited to harassment, intimidation, threats, denial of services, witnessing or seeing vandalism aimed at them or the broader community because of their race, ethnic origin, language, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, or disabilities.

Reports can be submitted anonymously or with contact information.

CK Victim Services will provide emotional support and referrals to appropriate community resources if those who report are in need of those services.

Data on hate and discrimination within CK will also be compiled through the reports, which will be used to inform a better community response.

“Hate has no home in Chatham-Kent, but we know hate and discrimination is happening in our communities,” said Jason Brown, the community engagement coordinator with CK Victim Services. ” The data collected from the tool will help us continue building a welcoming, inclusive, and diverse community and respond appropriately to hate and discrimination.”

Reports can be submitted online by clicking here, or by calling Victim Services at 519-436-6630.
