A local advocacy group fighting against the privatization of health care is looking for new members.
The Wallaceburg Walpole Island Health Coalition is conducting a membership drive for volunteers ahead of the upcoming provincial election.
Chairperson Shirley Roebuck said her group wants to ensure local voters are properly informed about the state of health care within Ontario.
“We have to make sure that everyone knows the issues and knows what’s happening with health care in order to make an informed vote,” she said. “We don’t think there should be profit obtained from taking care of our loved ones.”
Roebuck said the public also needs to be informed about the current state of health care within their community.
“Anyone that’s been to any hospital lately will notice what a staffing shortage there is,” said Roebuck, adding that the situation is even worse in long-term care facilities. “There’s a severe staffing shortage there and our elderly are suffering. And anyone who has wanted home care knows that the home care sector is in shambles.”
