The friends of the St. Clair River are coming together for a good cause. The area of concern is remediating St. Clair River. The project will work with other conservation partners to restore or protect natural habitat areas such as forest, native grasses and wetlands in the St Clair River “Area of Concern”. It will assist 15 landowners to restore or protect the natural habitats in suitable locations such as headwater areas of tributaries and riparian areas on their properties.

Lambton County and Chatham-Kent both have remaining natural cover at lower than what is recommended. This is cited as an impairment for the St Clair River. The restoration of this land from farming to more natural cover has an immediate benefit in volume. Additionally these areas assist with reducing soil erosion and take up nutrients. A downstream improvement in water quality should result. The St Clair Region Conservation Authority does monitor water quality and it is expected that the monitoring will show some improvement.
