Heritage Designation Comes at a Cost

Chatham-Kent Council is divided when it comes to removing heritage designation from a Chatham home.

Helen Campbell requested her home on Park Street be designated in 2010, but recently has decided she wants the title it removed.

Eight of 16 councillors present at last night’s meeting supported the recommendation from the Conservation Review Board to keep the designation.

Councillor Frank Vercouteren is one of the other eight who objected.

I have experienced, a few times, where someone has said ‘I don’t want anything to do with that because now I’m trapped and I can’t do what I want with my own property,'” the South Kent representative says. “Somebody told me the insurance policies are much higher because the replacement is more than three times as much money as a regular house.”

A subsequent motion to remove the designation also resulted in a tie. The matter is being handed over to the municipality’s legal department before returning to council next week.
