Hetherington Acclaimed as Federal Liberal Nominee in CKL

As rumours about a potential fall election continue to swirl, the local federal Liberals are getting their ducks in a row.

Greg Hetherington has been acclaimed as the candidate for the Liberal party in Chatham-Kent-Leamington.

National Campaign co-chair Navdeep Bains released a statement Wednesday night.

“With a strong focus on important new engagement with Canadians, the Team Trudeau nominations process helps ensure we’re ready to re-elect our dedicated Liberal team in Parliament and continue to elect even more talented, diverse, and hardworking community leaders as Liberal MPs across Canada, whenever the next campaign eventually arrives,” Bains says.

Katie Omstead carried the party’s banner through the last two elections, most recently falling short to Conservative Dave Epp in 2019.

Hetherington ran for the Conservative nomination in Lambton-Kent-Middlesex leading up to the 2019 election, ultimately losing the vote to now-MP Lianne Rood. He has been a local broadcaster for the past 40 years, and launched Wallaceburg-based Five Amigos Broadcasting in 2009.

The only other federal party to confirm their candidate for the next election so far is the People’s Party of Canada, tapping Liz Vallee for the post.
