High School Student Performance Ranked In CK

Half of Chatham-Kent’s public and Catholic high schools have seen an improvement in academic performance following the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Fraser Institute, a Canadian public policy think tank and registered charity, released its Report Card on Ontario’s Secondary Schools on Thursday.

The report card ranks the academic performance of the 689 public, Catholic, and independent secondary schools in Ontario for the 2021-22 school year. It marks the first time the annual rankings have been released since 2019.

The rankings out of 10 are based on academic indicators that are derived from the results of province-wide EQAO math testing for students in Grade 9 and the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test for students in Grade 10.

According to the report, four of Chatham-Kent’s eight secondary schools saw an improvement in performance between 2019 and 2022, while one school’s ranking remained unchanged.

Tilbury District High School and Wallaceburg District Secondary School were the most-improved high schools in Chatham-Kent. Tilbury rose from a score of 4.1 out of 10 in 2019 to 5.3 in 2022. Wallaceburg also increased from 4.1 to 5.3.

Chatham-Kent Secondary School and Ursuline College Chatham were the highest-ranked high schools in CK for 2022 with scores of 6.4 out of 10. The two schools were also the only ones in the municipality to surpass the provincial average of 6 out of 10.

John McGregor Secondary School and Ridgetown District High School saw the greatest decline in Chatham-Kent. John McGregor fell from a score of 4.6 out of 10 in 2019 to 3.5 in 2022. Ridgetown also declined from 4.2 to 3.1.
