Honouring a Fallen Chief

A day of mourning is being held on Walpole Island First Nation following the death of former Chief William Tooshkenig.

Tooshkenig passed away on April 2nd at the age of 80.

Along with seven years as Chief of the unceded territory, Tooshkenig served on Band Council, the Walpole Island Board of Education, Economic Development, Assembly of First Nations, and the Association of Iroquois and Allied Indians (AIAI.)

He is credited with helping to secure sustainable income and acting as an advocate for social justice that lead to changes in policies for disadvantaged residents.

Visitation will be held Sunday, April 6, 2025 from 6-9pm with a wake service at 8pm. A funeral will take place at 11 o’clock Monday morning at the Walpole Island Sports Complex with burial to follow at Highbanks Cemetery.

Out of respect for the family, all programs and schools on Walpole Island will be closed on Monday, however services such as Ontario Works, the Women’s Shelter, Warming Shelter, Home and Community Care, Daycare, Social Services, and Public Works including the Bridge and Water Treatment will continue to operate with limited staff.
