Christ Church in Chatham is bringing back a unique initiative to honour local veterans.

Last year, organizers arranged volunteers to stand vigil at the Cenotaph in Chatham for 150 continuous hours leading up to Remembrance Day.

Warden Judy Smith says it’ll be a bit different this year, hoping to have groups standing guard at the Cenotaph for 64 consecutive hours to mark the 100th anniversary of the WWI Armistice.

Organizers were overwhelmed with the response to last year’s vigil. “The community was so open, there was not a minute in that 150 hours there was not somebody at the Cenotaph, people stopping by just to say thank you for what was being done.”

Smith says they’re looking for community groups, businesses, and organizations to participate.

The shifts will be two hours long from 6pm on November 8th until 10am on November 11th.

Christ Church, with the support of Revera Retirement Living in Ridgetown and Blenheim, will be open 24 hours a day as a warming station with refreshments for participants.

Anyone who would like to take part is asked to contact Christ Church at 519-352-1640 or churchoffice@christchurchchatham.ca.
